Description
Humpback Whales bubble net feed off the coast of Juneau Alaska giving the people on a passing excursion boat the thrill of seeing a rarely witnessed sight. Seagulls point the way to this extraordinary event. This is a digital painting titled Humpback Whales Bubble Netting based on an original photograph taken in May 2017 by Rebecca Korpita
Bubble Net Feeding is a unique feeding technique employed by Humpback Whales, in which a group of whales swim in a shrinking circle with one designated whale blowing bubbles below a school of fish. This shrinking column of bubbles surrounds the school of fish confusing the fish and forcing them upward. The whales then swim upward through the bubble net with open mouths catching thousands of fish in one gulp.
