Description
The Island Hotel, one of the most famous haunted bed and breakfasts in Florida was constructed in 1859 and is built from seashell tabby with oak supports. Listed on the National Register of Historic places, the walls are almost 12 inches thick and have withstood countless storms and hurricanes. The hotel has settled and its sloping floors have survived the passage of time, many guests, and several feet of water every time a storm blew the roof away. The building was originally built as a general store and post office. Though passing through several owners and a very interesting history, little has changed it over the years. The hotel nearly burned to the ground during the depression, when it operated as a speak-easy and brothel. A small bar was added on the ground floor and was painted with murals of Cedar Key in 1945. A large picture of King Neptune and his court is prominently displayed over the bar of the King Neptune Lounge, a cozy hangout for locals.
This is a digital oil painting with an impasto effect done from an original photograph by Rebecca Korpita who stayed there years ago and also in the summer of 2013 where she is pretty sure she was visited by one of the resident ghosts while staying in an outstairs room.
